Bethany Gardiner-Smith, Flute

Bethany started playing aged 8 after being given her first flute by her Grandma. She gained a place in the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain aged 10 and later went on to join the National Youth Wind Ensemble as Principle piccolo player as well as playing Principle flute for the Watford Youth Orchestra.

Between 2003 and 2005 Beth played flute and piccolo as a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, playing under conductors such as Marin Alsop, Yan Pascal Tortelier and Sir Roger Norrington, in venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Barbican and Birmingham Symphony Hall.

Beth studied flute and piano at the Junior Royal Academy of Music (JRAM) under Susan Torke and was Principle Flute in the JRAM Symphony Orchestra under conductor Peter Stark for three years. Beth was awarded the JRAM Senior Woodwind Prize in 2004.

Beth has a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford. She was awarded a music scholarship at Keble College Oxford, and was conductor of the Keble College Orchestra as well as Principle flute of the Oxford University Orchestra and Oxford University Sinfonietta.

Beth now plays Principle Flute for the Abbots Langley Orchestra alongside her Grandma Barbara Smith, and also plays flute and piccolo for the BBC Elstree Concert Band.
